The fascinating afterlife of expired domains – Domain Name Wire | Domain Name News
Sean Markey goes down many rabbit holes looking at what happened to expired domain names.
Hello, back with you from a little COVID-19 hiatus with the most interesting SEO-related domain sales from NameJet and SnapNames in September. I usually try to cover five domains in a piece, but the combination of COVID-19 destroying my mitochondria so that my energy is much harder to come by in the post-acute phase, and the three domains I did write about (especially the third one) being interesting SEO rabbit holes to fall down, I think there’s enough here that you won’t feel slighted.
Eramuslim .com sold for $3,215 at SnapNames
I always say (because it’s true) the most valuable signal a domain can have as it goes through the expiration process is organic traffic as measured by a tool like Ahrefs or Semrush. At the beginning of 2026 this site was getting 34k – 39k organic visits a month, but when it fully dropped it was still estimated to have 7k in organic traffic.
It looks like as soon as the buyer got possession of the site, they immediately put up a site that looks like the old site (which I cannot endorse, but also cannot deny as an effective traffic strategy). Though this site stopped publishing at the end of July, you can see their traffic bounced–from a low in ~1500 range back up to just over 5k.

SimilarWeb estimates the site is getting almost 40k total (not just organic) traffic per month, so this was an exceptional pickup for $3.2k. The real reason it sold at a discount is that it is not an English-language site ranking for English-language keywords.
But wait, why is the traffic falling on a rebuilt site (it was 9k when I started writing this, now it’s down to 5k)?
Click on literally any article:

LOL, there’s no content; it’s a Potemkin village.
File this under “how not to rebuild a site.”
Or maybe “pay for the full site rebuild”; it’s only a couple hundred at most. People really pay $3k+ for a domain and won’t splurge on the full site rebuild only to lose all that valuable traffic.
HRRJ .org sold for $3,600 at SnapNames
The Hampton Roads Regional Jail in Portsmouth, Virginia, served several cities in the region until its board voted to close it in 2023. The jail closed, but its domain kept ranking. It’s still number one for “hampton roads regional jail inmate search” and number three for “hampton roads regional jail.”
It also ranks for one other thing. Casino things. HRRJ .org/tr/ is number one in Turkey for “deneme bonusu çevrimsiz,” which means a betting trial bonus with no wagering requirement. That’s the same family of searches as Goodwood and Mandes, the last two months’ Turkish betting domains.
There are some redirect shenanigans at play here (as you would expect), but the domain doesn’t resolve for me. I even tried on URLScan.io, and it didn’t resolve there either, so maybe they’ve already extracted all the value from this name and have moved on, because that’s how it goes with these churn and burn plays.
HRRJ .org isn’t alone. Eight September names, all bought at SnapNames, now share the same pair of Cloudflare nameservers that also do not resolve for me:
- CoolMooseCafe .net, $4,516
- NENeuro .com, $4,500
- TheWaterfrontLaCrosse .com, $4,202
- TheArkPubAndEatery .com, $3,950
- HRRJ .org, $3,600
- TheMarketBosphorus .com, $3,000
- MofongoRest .com, $2,200
- AlexFitness-SF .com, $2,043
That’s $28,011 for a cafe, a neurology practice, three restaurants, a pub, a gym, and a jail.
Here’s what Google ranks some of these sites for:
- CoolMooseCafe .net (a breakfast cafe in Jacksonville): Google ranks its menu page number one for “cool moose cafe” and its /tr/ page number one in Turkey for “slot bahis.” Ahrefs first found that /tr/ page on October 5, and when its crawler loaded the page on October 9, the title was “Volkskino Open Air – Sommerkino im Stadtpark | Spielzeit 2017,” the 2017 schedule for a German outdoor cinema.
- NENeuro .com (New England Neurological Associates, which joined Tufts Medicine): Google still ranks it number one for “new england neurological,” and Ahrefs still sees doctor bio pages ranking for the doctors’ names. Load one of those doctor pages today and you get a temporary redirect to DoreensCupOfJoe .com, which shows a “Hawaiian Acres Real Estate” site with a 555 phone number and “0 Lots Sold Since 2009.”
- HRRJ .org: Google ranks it for the jail and for Turkish betting bonuses. Visitors get a Brooklyn deli.
However, they are all blocked for me when I visit, so I asked Claude about this, and this is what it told me:
These sites show different things depending on who’s asking. Regular visitors get blocked by Cloudflare. Google gets Turkish betting pages, which is what its search results show ranking number one. Other crawlers get redirected to the websites of dead small businesses. That’s called cloaking, and my best guess is that the block exists so competitors and anyone who might file a spam report can’t see what Google sees.
Tricky.
And it’s definitely what some similar sites we’ve covered have been doing with their weird redirect chains ending at St. Louis donut shops (which, if you visit now, takes you to restaurantcanpep .com, an expired domain that went for $2.4k at DropCatch on October 29th). Keep revisiting for a good time, and see how the chains stretch out.
It’s turtles closed restaurants all the way down.
EddieMuller .com sold for $2,301 at SnapNames
Eddie Muller is the “Czar of Noir.” He hosts Noir Alley on Turner Classic Movies and founded the Film Noir Foundation. His personal .com still ranks number one in the US for “noir films,” and it was getting about 900 estimated organic visits a month in August.
This is the kind of name an SEO would buy to build a film-related site on, or at least a movie-review affiliate site back in, like, 2018 (though doing this on a personal site built on someone’s name was always a bit awkward in my opinion).
Today, though, EddieMuller .com redirects to an author page on BitcoinFoundation .org, a crypto news site Ahrefs has at about 87,000 organic visits a month. The site ranks number one for searches like “bitcoin crash” and “why is bitcoin dropping.”
Here’s his bio on that page:

Okay, let’s pause and really ask: did the Czar of Noir really join the Bitcoin Foundation?
Rather than laugh derisively at the very idea, I spent at least 27 seconds checking his Wikipedia and, you won’t be surprised to learn, there are zero mentions of Bitcoin.
So what’s going on here? I’ll try to break down this fairly complex play in very simple terms.
- The BitcoinFoundation.org, a real organization at one time, closed down, and its very valuable domain expired and went through Namecheap’s expired domain auction in January 2026. According to NameBio, it sold for $78,500.
- The site came back to life as a cryptocurrency news site filled to the brim with terrible AI-generated featured images and, I checked with an Originality.ai scan (but also my own eyeballs), AI-generated content.
- They publish a bunch of content under the new “author” Eddie Muller, and create an author page with all of those pieces of content listed.
- They redirect Eddie’s old personal site to that page, making it look real and giving it some EEAT signals, which are valuable and hard (but clearly not impossible) to fake.
- As an added bonus, all the valuable referring domains that made EddieMuller .com sell for $2k+ now redirect to the author page, where all the posts are listed. That authority and trust now flows through to those blog posts, helping them rank.
- They are also using Eddie as a “fact checker” on older articles, which gives those blog posts a reason to show up on that page where all that link juice is being poured:

It’s a diabolical play, and is very pretty EEAT theater for Googlebot’s benefit.
The afterlife of domain names is always a wild, but depressing ride that takes us further into the increasingly tangible reality of the dead internet theory.
